Well, this thread seems well and truly diverted from the original question about classical music ....

jammy - where are you on the investigating of classical? :violin: - were you foolish enough to take any of the advice given on the 1st page and a half of this thread before it got diverted onto what kit to play the classical music that you haven't yet got .... :D
Jerry - unrepentant boxswapper 8-) Life's too short for boring hifi !

Current system ... MBL 116F speakers, ... various and varying electronics and cables ... Laptop (TIDAL hirez)

I'm not a massive collector of classical but my favourites are Motzarts Clainet concerto & Elgars Enigma Variations. I also once dropped luck borrowing some CD's from the library with a collection by a composer called Ketelby....most pleasant.

I'd recommend:

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone & The Cello Suites
Karl Jenkins - Stabat Mater (I had the pleasure of listening to this live at Winchester Cathedral, Belinda Sykes was amazing...on CD it's never felt the same)
Pavane, Op. 50 - Gabriel Faure
Requiem: Lacrimosa - Mozart
IV Pie Jesu : Requiem Op. 48 - Gabriel Faure
Also listen to Vide Cor Meum (from the Hannibal) by Patrick Cassidy...short but rather beautiful.
My Kit – I moved to home theatre setup sorry...Denon SR7011, Anthony Gallo A'Diva SE Fronts, SpeakerCraft Profile AIM LCR3 One Rears, BK Electronics XLS200-DF MK2 Sub, Epson Projection.

But I would love a cheeky little AP10, AP20 sort of amp for a bedroom setup...

I dredged up this old post by the good Doc because it says something I have been thinking about. My speakers are fairly big compared to cubes but no where near as big as Lindsay T style wardrobes. My speakers sound big (imo) because they are semi omni have big drivers and quite a few of them.

So what makes a small speaker sound big ? I don't want small speakers just curious.

If they DON'T have a Linn, Naim, KEF, Harbeth, Spendor, B&W, Rogers, NEAT, ATC SCM11, Mission, PMC, AVI, Mordaunt Short, Acoustic Energy, Dynaudio, Acoustic Energy, Monitor Audio, Focal, or Q Acoustics badge on them. :angry-fire:

The Cubes certainly sound bigger than the slim floorstanders that have been popular for the last 15 years or so. We had M300s and Cube 1s set up at a local dealer's and then brought in a new £3k multi-driver slim floorstander. They sounded like a much smaller speaker than the cubes.

My tiny, Doc-modded Mission 760's sound WAY bigger than they ought to. I think it's something to do with the mass-loading and rigidity of the cabinets that lets the drivers do their work without the box shaking or vibrating around them.

Oh yeah, mass loading. Forgot about that.

And now i recollect what Doc used to say about the mid bass in a cube being in phase with the floor. I expect talll thin floor standers with point & squirt must be moving back and forth like a rocking horse
