Re: New Rack Wood or Granite
Extremely unlikely. What is more likely is you heard a set of circumstances that suited it, but you have now adopted the cardinal sin of thinking that makes it universal and absolute.

No not at all. I have heard several decks in slate in different locations with different kit, and all have sounded great to my ears. In many instances I have heard the same decks previously in wooden type plinths, and I have always preferred the slate. Perhaps I just have different tastes to you Richard. All I can say is decks in slate plinths used with valve kit sound superb to my ears.

Wood or Granite......Ive no idea.
But if you chuck an axe at a lump of wood - it will stick in with a GOOD THUD.
And if you chuck an axe at a lump of granite - it will bounce off with a BAD CHINK.
I know which sound i would rather have....!!!!!
Hope this clears up your conundrum.

I used RA Torlyte for quite some time, the material is wood but it is hollow core and as light as a feather, I have sold the three Torlyte plinths but I have the bottom to a Torlyte rack you could use to compare, I could pop it in the post to youapplemarc wrote:So as of Monday I will sit down and listen to the options to see what I prefer
Re: New Rack Wood or Granite
Ikea Lack furniture is a similar structure to a hollow core door, which is a principally cardboard in a honeycomb pattern with a had board veneer, which sucks life out of the music and sounds shite.
Torlyte is wood in a grid like pattern

Torlyte is very light and rigid. Aerolam is sort of the metal version of it.
The only problem with Torlyte is it is marketed by Russ Andrew so you get ripped off if you want to use it.

There is often Torlyte on ebay, I just sold three Torlyte platforms for about £90 each ( new £180), all I have left if a four tier Torlyte rack.Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote:Torlyte is very light and rigid. Aerolam is sort of the metal version of it.

Yep im afraid yer right Doc, Russ Andrews is indeed a rip off artist of the highest order - still if folk have more money than brains...!!!
Russ started out ok in the early days - good simple cost effective tweeks.
One look at his cataloge now.....Lost the plot and forgoten his roots.
