I have done that. If I have to disconnect t the input that the phono is using, then it is no use.

What is the problem with just switching from one input (aux) to the other (phono) ?

Because I don't want the NVA's volume control to operate the Merdian CD player. I wanted to bypass the NVA volume control. The Merdian sounds fantastic direct into the power amp with nothing in-between.

Putting the Meridian in the Direct input of the pre-amp does send it through the SA volume unit - so you are running through that anyway.

Really. Well that's new information. And welcome.
So what is direct about it?

The Direct input is meant to be used when only a single source is needed, which then has volume control via the pre-amp.

More than a single source - then you have to use the switchable inputs and not the Direct.

Ah.
Thanks for that.
In that case, it's not needed.
I have to say, in the faint sound that was coming from the phono input, it sounded very transparent.

Try running both via switchable inputs. See how it sounds.

When using the DAC then set the volume of the preamp to about 75% and then run volume control via the DAC.

Turn volume down again before going over to phono.

To be honest, I could do that by using the AMR that I have.
In fact, and I haven't tried this, if I turn the AMR up to 0bD, it switches out the volume control anyway.
It's only looking g at the NVA problem that reminded me that this was possible.
