P50 Stepped attenuators

Unread post by Alfi »

Does anyone happen to know the Ohmic value of the stepped attenuator used by the DOC on the P50 SA pre amp - is it 10k?

Thanks in advance.

Later preamps use 10k log film pots, so I assume the stepped attenuators were similar. HiFi Collective may be able to advise further.

Thanks Dave, that sounds about right and thank you for your suggestion to discuss with Hifi Collective. I certainly will do that,

Deos a stepped attenuator have a single ohmic value. Wouldn't it change as you stepped the volume from resistor to resistor.

Alfi, I ordered one at Hifi Collective for my AP70 a few month ago. First I ordered a Blue series, Takman metal film, 0,5W, 50k and was told that the ones Richard used are the 10k. So I changed the order to 10k. I put it in the amp and it sounds fine.

Yes. I think 10k would be the least resistance or the volume would be at max all the time.

You're welcome. One thing I forgot to tell you is that I ordered Charcroft Z-Foils as load resistors. I know that Richard once posted that he thinks that we'll be going in a slurpers trap by ordering these, but I wanted to try them! The results are excellent but I don't know if there's a big difference to the takman metal film ones.

Best wishes,

Hannes

I’ve preferred Takman carbons to the metal films in this application, but YMMV.

I don't know if carbons are better. I ordered metals because in an earlier thread Richard mentioned that he used to use these.
