Rather embarrassingly, it turns out I’ve been screwing myself. I tracked down the problem to a humidifier that I hade constantly running on low setting. Great big hum on low setting, lesser hum on high setting. Inky black silence 😉 when it’s turned off.

Time to start living with dry air...
I recall a magazine in the 80s saying a humidifier improved SQ.

I could believe it. But as to whether if affects the cartridge, the sound waves, or the person listening....

Don't laugh, it really did sort this reviewer's issue with underfloor heating set high and not readily adjustable, coupled with good double glazing. helped with static on his LP's as well - and he had thousands of records and maybe still has. I visited there regularly back then and can vouch for the humidifier in his particular situation.

Am i correct in recalling it is James Michael Hughes who wrote in HiFi Answers.

I have built one of these after having intermittent success with the Alt Hifi. Not only does DCT03 produce inky black silence, even when switching to phono, it has doubled the improvement from my BMU. Fantastic piece of kit. Thoughrouly recommended for DC Hum from the BMU or any other audio device.

Jimmy Hughes liked his listening air rather humid, but others prefer dry air. Sound certainly propagates differently with humidity I understand, but the main thing where the dratted vinyl is concerned is temperature, as many cartridges have temp sensitive suspension parts, which can play havoc with tracking ability and high frequency response. Speakers too have massive changes with room temperature, I suggest those with rubbery suspensions and lowish damping. Maybe tightly suspended speakers and foam surrounds aren't affected the same?
