How are the "right to repair" discussions likely to affect NVA in the future ?

Wont effect me at all. I already give a right of repair. I repair amps made in the 80's. The only time I refuse to repair as when the item has been modified and fecked with or was sold under certain conditions like it should never be sold on (prototypes), I advice not to repair when the cost exceeds the value.

As I read it (the article linked to) manufacturers would need to supply independent repairers with repair information giving consumers more options when (if) repairs are necessary.

If manufacturers insist on repairs only going to them , or authorised repairers ----

“This restricts the access of independent repairers to spare parts and information - and that limits the scope and affordability of repair services.”

Maybe there will be derogation for specialist low volume consumer items ?

Its a non story as far as NVA are concerned, but potentially its a big thing, the "right to repair" is getting a head of steam behind it. I still remember the shock of looking inside a HP 3581a wave analyzer and realizing that the PCB had a socket containing an idle 7 segment display, to provide a spare part in case the then new and potentially unreliable devices failed.

Interesting that cars don't seem to be included according to the report.

Well, while not perfect, cars are still reasonably open. Its not as if they stop working if you put someone else’s tyres on it.

Cars are used as the Gold Standard for open source in this issue. Most manufacturers are very open.

The movement largely stems from companies like Apple suing any repairer who shows their schematics, claiming it's IP theft etc.

The grey area for me is the use of (third party sourced) remanufactured parts being used for repairs. If I'm buying something from a 2nd hand seller and it's been repaired, at all, I'd expect to be told, especially if it uses none OEM or remanufactured parts sourced from a third party.

Apple claim this affects their brand, and I can see some merit in that argument (nano merit), but then it wouldn't be an issue if they actually offered repairs rather than trying to screw you for an upgrade when what you need a $5 part that they won't supply.

I think the guys in the US could put this to bed simply by putting a sticker on anything they repair that says " contains none original parts used for third party repair". Then Apple could go f_ck themselves.

An interesting topic, look up apple repair guy https://www.youtube.com/user/rossmanngroup
