'Popping/thumping' sound from system

Unread post by Berty bass »

System is Rega P6 with Goldring Excel GS (MC) cartridge into a Phono 2 and then through a Rega Elicit-R. Main source is the turntable and, every so often, I'm getting a relatively low level but quite discernible noise somewhere between a pop and a thump. No other system noise audible at the levels I listen at. The turntable is on a dedicated wall support, within a fireplace (fire removed :) ), the Phono 2 on the top shelf of a rack unit directly below it, the TT PSU and CDP on the shelf below that them the Elicit-R at the bottom, on the ground. Speakers are either side of the fireplace and the Phono 2 PSU is beyond the right hand speaker, so about 4 feet or so away from the head unit and other kit. Any ideas or suggestions for what it might be and what I might be able to do to remove it. It's frustrating because the Phono 2 is such a significant step up from my previous Rega Fono MC anyway, but I know I can't be hearing it at its best if its suffering from some kind of interference. Any thoughts gratefully received. Thanks.

Almost certainly something in the house is switching on and off and has no suppressor on the switch, you are hearing the contact spark.

Ah. So, what, domestic appliances, do you think? Could it be a fridge or something similar? Is there any plug-in device I could use to suppress the sound and/or try to identify the culprit?

Would a BMU solve this?

Could be a heating system / boiler, fridge, freezer. Maybe something external to the home - large installations in the neighbourhood.

Doesn't sound like a mobile phone. It happens pretty regularly, every few minutes or so, but I've not been so exercised with it as to time it or anything. I'm racking my brain to think of devices that might switch on and off and I'm not really getting much further than the fridge. Maybe lights? Of course, if it is something from outside I'd guess there's little I can do about it but I'd like to do as much diagnosing within the house as I can to start with. The Rega Fono wasn't susceptible to it - but, there again, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as the Phono 2, so it's something I'm prepared to live with if eradication proves impossible.

If the noise is quite regular/every few minutes, you could go around the house unplugging individual appliances to see whether they can be eliminated as possible causes.

I have my phono 2 wrapped up in tin foil currently. It looks like its ready to be popped into the oven :animals-chickencatch: , but with the tinfoil and a bit of judicious relocation of equipment with transformers allied to moving the Phono 2 as far away from internet interference as I can get it seems to have tamed it.

If it is an airborne signal than no a DC blocker or BMU wont help. Any switch creates a spark, older and more worn the worse, a spark creates a RF signal (original morse was just sparks). The very high gain of the mc P2 means it picks it up.

If it is a mains borne blip then a BMU will get rid of it - sorry it is suck it and see.
