New NVA member

Unread post by AudioRecruit »

Hi,

I have always wanted to go with NVA but life just got in the way! Anyhow i`m in a position where i`m trying to decide on the best route and what to get. I have an audiolab 8000S, 8000DAC and 8000CDM. The DAC and CDM i`ll probably keep/use but the rest can be replaced.

Where do i start? What models should i consider and what partnership speaker wise should i match with?

Lastly, with loans, would this be an option if i decide on what path to follow?

Many thanks,
Pete.

Hi Pete, welcome.

I'm a relative newbie here (since April) and limbering up for my first NVA purchase.

A friend loaned me an AP20 for a few months and I love it. Since yesterday I've had the A40 monoblocks, P50sa passive-pre, and LS6 cables on loan from the Doc. And it's utterly brilliant, a noticeable shift up the range - as described by many forum users.

I'm sure others will chime in with far more informed suggestions here than I, but my suggestion is to have a glance over my first thread - you probably have more experience than me, and my entry into NVA is purely cost based, but there might be something interesting for you in the following thread:

"Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art." ~ Frederic Chopin

Amps/cables: NVA P50sa (48 step), A40 mk3, LS6, SSP
Digi/source: ARCAM CDS50
PaS: Troels Gravesen Scanspeak Discovery 3-Way Classic (homemade)

Music lover and piano dork.

Good morning :)

I have a pair of kef q35 but wanting to get some new bookshelves as the space is smaller and I think floorstanders are just too big.

I’m open to any suggestions :)

Also.... I have a miller and kreisel sub that is like to use with this. Would I be better off with a 50sp as opposed to the starter kit so I can use one of the pre outs to feed my active sub?

Thanks for the link pianist, good reading there!

Cheers,

IMO NEVER use a sub with a NVA systems, they kill the music for hi-fi effect.

I strongly dislike 'subs'. I'd much rather keep the music intact than use one.

The NVA Cube speakers will give a much more generous and natural presentation than the Kefs you have been using.

You don't mention budget...?

That’ll be a no to the sub then :) The missus has her eye on that for the third room as will the kefs so I’ll go straight 2 channel!

I think the cubes will be out of budget, looking around £300-400 on those excluding stands. Apart from cubes what would be good to look at?

I think there's every chance you'll be able to find speakers that you prefer to the Kef q35's without too much difficulty for £400. Especially if you go 2nd hand or DIY.

£600 gets you an NVA starter system - A20/P20 pre power, interconnect cable, speaker cable, Cubette speakers. Once you've heard the purity of a speaker without a traditional crossover then I reckon you will find it very hard to go back to 'mainstream' designs.

I'm a big believer in hearing the 'whole' NVA thing in one go. Then, you don't 'die wondering'.

Other speakers? Klipsch and Royd (s/h) get lots of recommendations, here.

Pete

The best bang for buck in speakers currently seem to be the Qacoustic range. Great speakers for not a lot of money, although to qualify that I have never actually heard a pair hung off an NVA amp.

I use a small pair of 3020 with a Quad 606 amp and they perform well beyond their pricepoint in my second system.

I also adore Klipsch Heresy speakers if you like a bit of fun they are complete hooligans in a really nice way, you can get some really good holographic imaging with them too if you get them set up correctly.

In saying all that I have never actually heard your Kefs, maybe they will respond nicely to new amps?

Savvy says change the lot in one go, I am always a bit more cautious and like to change a bit at a time.
