New entry level products?

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

Recently low end or entry level NVA is the thing that has struggling for sales as most of my business is now improvers or established hi-fi users. What seems to push those low end products at Ebay is price. Like things like the Tisbury passive and Class D amps.

How about a new two / three input single output pre based on the P50 with the case shrunk that could be sold at about £100. Maybe called P20. The old mk1 A30 would have been perfect for a power amp but I really don’t want to put it back into production. Perhaps I should make a cheaper slightly less power A20 power amp just for this in the old A30 box and try and get price down as close to £150 as I can. Perhaps do them as a package as well as separate.

This will also give an established base of NVA users and improvers.

I think its a great idea Doc.
And I can see you shifting em once available.
Thats the thing with NVA once you get hooked, you stay hooked and tend to move up range.

I think they'd be very popular.

I know the AP10 is a fantastic sounding amp, I have a friend who uses in his bedroom and it's amazing. So to offer a simple step up, introduction pre/amp for say £250 as a kit would be amazing.

But I would love a cheeky little AP10, AP20 sort of amp for a bedroom setup...

A single output pre would be popular. A stepped attenuator version should see off Tisbury and any other competition. Most people don't need more than 3 inputs these days though I think the cheap single input amps are rather useless outside computer audio set ups.

The problem is the Tisbury has a cheap imitation Chinese DACT style copy, it is worse sounding than my standard pot as I bought a couple to try. A proper SA would put the price well above £200 so it doesn't come into this equation.

3 in 1 out is about right, and being able to buy a new NVA pre/power setup for around £250.00 could be the bargain of the year so far. Could you make a stepped attenuator version that wasn't too much of a price hike on the new basic model? As you know Tisburys (for instance) go for £129.00 so could a P20SA be cost effective? Just thinking out loud.

EDIT. You've answered my question while I was asking it.

Sorry to add another product to the mix (only because I want one) but a mini power supply for Raspberry Pi DAC like the HiFiBerry/Durio would be popular. If you could do one for £100 which includes a case that takes the Raspberry and DAC I bet you'd shift some. I know you'll say no to this but it's only because I've been hunting for something similar ;)
