Ooo you've known about NVA for a while then! Does the old NVA have a similar sound?

The (very) old NVA's were compared to Naim and Exposure back in the 80's. When I got mine it was still a relatively new name in the Hifi world and I found the sound smoother than the harsh, trebly character of a Naim.

The newest A40 in monoblock form beats the old on every level: dynamics, silence, detail, soundstage and imaging. But the old model has a solid warmth that just wraps you inside the music (but it can still rock out when required!).

I was a young Hifi enthousiast back then, but lost interest in the 90's and 2000's. A couple of years ago I started to get back into audio gear again and thinking about a new amp led me back to NVA and this forum.

Have you had much to do with anything other than NVA or have you just stuck with NVA?

The first system I had as a teenager was all Pioneer, with which I discovered that I was passionately fond of music, just about everything: Punk, prog, folk, jazz, classical, electronic. So my Hifi quest took me to equipment that would be able to cope with a wide variety of styles.

My first 'proper' amp was a Nytech CA252, a classic and a rarity (I've seen a couple in internet auctions recently and they go for serious money). And the NVA P80/A40 combo followed that. Along with a pair of Arcam One speakers this formed the basis for my rig for about 25 years. Simply because I never heard anything I liked more; I had a Mark Levinson CD/DAC/Pre/Power rig on semi-permanent loan for a long time but hardly used it, disliking the cold and surgical quality of the reproduction.

Due to total ignorance I have abused the NVA's with different cables over the course of the decades. Speaker wires from Monster Cable (NOT a good match!) and Supra (better but not NVA). Interconnects from MIT and Accuphase.

My reserve amp is another vintage device, a Sansui AU217 from 1979 and that is under my workdesk driving a pair of Doc-modded Mission 760's . And for the last few years I had a pair of Magnepan MMG planar speakers until I recently modded a pair of Audiolad Minax mini-monitors and they are my current boxes (but there's something heading this way in the post ....).

That's not a bad hifi journey! The sansui X17 amps are supposed to be fantastic from what I've read and the Nytech looks uber cool! I don't suppose you are expecting delivery of two cube shaped objects by any chance???

Give us a chance - last time I checked the things were in transit in Tamworth (of all places - an ex-girlfriend of mine came from there).
