Cube 1 Mk 1.5

Unread post by kazam »

I think we can all agree that it's not hard to stockpile audio kit. While my compulsion towards amplification remains steadfast (NVA of various flavour, Exposure and Nytech), i'd suggest that in hifi affliction terms it is the loudspeaker which is my greatest weakness. They seem to offer all the variety of the finest olde english sweet shop and while we all have favourites, a little variety is also nice, is it not?

Excuses thus made for my speaker haul, im excited to be able to write that my pair of Mk 1 Cubes are with the Doc, who has agreed to upgrade drivers to Mk 2 specification. The Mk1s had impressed as they were, but we never quite gelled and in the back of my mind there were always doubts about unoriginal tweeters and damage to a main driver that resulted during their shipment to me.

I will update this post when i get these back (how's progress Doc?) but thought i'd share the excitement of anticipation. I'm  that i can capture a little of the magic experienced when I heard stage one Cubix Pros recently.

A quick update on these. I've had them in place for a while now and they've truly won me over. Some thoughts-

More and improved musical information

Pronounced and 'projected' image

Seamless and natural driver integration

Very impressive scale of sound, from what is a relatively small enclosure

I can now unreservedly state that these are my favourite speakers and I will be selling my PMCs. The current Cube 1s would therefore seem to offer real value for money and I would suggest that you should all try to give them a good listen.

The improvements in sound to me suggest that some thing was amiss previously. I believe that the Doc tweaked the minimal crossover in addition to fitting the mk2 doped mid bass drivers.

Cosmetically they've had a tidy too, I've got new grilles all round and these have helped to finish the aesthetics off nicely. Sincere thanks for your work on these Doc, they are quite simply amazing!

Pics to follow..

Just swapped the stool stands (was that what you were diplomatically looking to say?! ) in. I've been using the originals, but needed a break from the brutal aesthetics. Havent turned the wick up since, but they seem to be doing the job, even though they are clearly polar opposite to the originals structure wise.

The originals were off cuts from when they made the Forth Bridge

Spray those original stands the same colour as the walls and they will disappear

I love those little wooden tables for the kit to sit on. I'm guessing they were custom made?
