BMU con fused?

Unread post by ArloFlynn »

Good evening,

I was wondering if anyone would have any idea why the 5amp fuse on my BMU blows when I turn it on? It has happened 3 times in the 6 months I have owned it,. The first time it happened it was fully loaded, IE a pair of A70s and a pair of phono2 PSUs already switched to on. Since then twice with no initial load.

Cheers – Kevin.

The term Inrush current springs to mind. Basically the BMU is a big inductor* and more current flow as the magnetic field is established. Hence the need for a 13A fuse.

*Transformers being inductive devices.

Ah! that will be the problem. For some reason I must have replaced the original 13amp when it blew with a 5amp in error.
Most appreciated.

Another Q - Is it ok to leave all attached peripherals switched on and just use the BMU as the on/off switch? Or best to power each item on individually after the BMU is switched on?

Thanks
Kevin

I don't think it will harm anything although i have a big bmu and i still switch components on one at a time. I like to hear the very small switch on noise from each of the drivers. I used to get my RCB tripping if everything went one at once. Second time was always fine after the caps had got a bit of charge in em.

Thanks, I will power on/off individually hence fourth. As the wife is away this coming week, I may leave it powered on all week too, see how that affects me!

Another Q if I may. As the BMU only has 4 sockets and I need to plug in 5 items (currently A70 monos, 2xpsu for phono2) that leaves the source in the normal mains. Can the BMU accept a double adapter in one socket? Or is that a big no-no?
