No HIFI but success of the day

Unread post by Hannes-Gregor »

There's an everlasting hand mixer: The GDR made RG28.
I don't know how old it is, but my wife got it from her parents when she moved out from home at the age of twenty (1991). We've been using it from then on. Until three weeks ago the suppression capacitor quit with a little puff and flash:

Today I found a NOS one on the flee market and soldered it in:

So this beauty hopefully is ready to go for the next thirty years:

Yep, as a kid I remember being sent to the local repair shop to have our toaster fixed. Now, for work, we buy the cheapest toaster available from Tesco on the basis that it is more likely to fail within it's warranty period...and be replaced for free. The last 3 have not let us down, in that respect :guiness;

Resources were rare in the GDR so a lot of things were build to last. The Braun mixer of my daughter quit six weeks after the end of the warranty period, so a bit longer than two years.

I've been using the same Philips mixer for about 20 years, so far.

There is now a state-organised initiative in The Netherlands to get people to repair broken machines and not simply dispose of them.

Then they rebadged it as Philips for the Netherlands market. In West Germany it was sold as Privileg.

Sad days, used to buy toaster elements and replace them at home! Totally pissed with the cooker that gave up last week and can't find a New element anywhere. So new cooker , if I can get one before Xmas .

You're post made me curious but I couldn't find any connection between the RG28 and Philips. Did you maybe own this one? Looks similar.

Built in obselescence really pisses me off. Bought a Nikon Coolpix camera in 2013. It clapped out when we were in Kenya two months ago and we cant see the pictures we took. :angry-screaming:

I suppose six years is a good life this day and age.
