which speakers for Doc mods ?

Unread post by karatestu »

Hello,

I am interested in Doc modding some speakers.

What type of speaker is best suited to this ?

Small standmounted or floorstander
ported or sealed

I have a small pair of mordaunt short budget stand mounts but i think they are rear ported.

Thanks, Stu

Doc-mods make speakers closed units, so any ports get sealed in the process.

I think that the all-knowing powers here will say that almost any speaker of a reasonable quality can be modded. I have done 2 pairs of small boxes to terrific effect. Certainly transformed my little budget Mission 760's making them sound tighter, 'faster', bigger and more accurate.

Suck it and see !

Try and look for infinite baffle and minimal first or second order crossover. Old Missions used audax drivers with simple crossover but were invariably ported. I used a few audax drivers with doc mods.

p.s - I have done stand and floor standers and multiple drivers .If you do multiple drivers , you will need to ask about the series wiring .

Some speakers would be criminal to mod due to their desirability as is. In some cases closing front ports would damage the aesthetics. I would suggest the logical thing would be to try on a junker speaker and use NVA drive units where Richard has perfected the amount of doping required. Also maybe there is a lighter solution to metal plate if it makes large speakers too heavy to shift. Why not buy a kit speaker and mod that? Has anyone considered using an LS3/5A kit cabinet? Looks like the latest Proac Tablette 10s use this approach.

Im pretty sure an ls3/5a cabinet would be to expensive .

the point of the steel plate is mass loading , a lighter solution is accordingly an oxymoron .

Additionally , if you close the front port inside the box , then it will not ruin the aesthetics

Any, two way stand mounts are easier to do.

If you can find some vintage speakers that you can screw that back panel off it will make it easier to get the steel plate in and allow you to get more of it in than trying to fit through the mid/bass driver hole.
Main System. Amp - Luxman LV-120, CD - Pioneer PDX505 & Hitachi DA 401. Turntable - Trio KD-2055/Denon DL-110 & Ortofon VMS20E. Cassette Deck - JVC KD A55. Speakers - Arcam Alpha connected with NVA LS3.

Headphone System - Little Dot Mkiii headphone amp, various vintage CD players into NVA P50 with Sennheiser HD600 and Beyer DT 880

Start the process by removing all wadding and listening, then steel plate the cab listen then do the crossover listen then dope existing drivers listen then replace the drivers if the existing ones aren't good or responding well.
