Transformers

Unread post by karatestu »

Most of the gear i have owned has come with a torid.

I have just acquired four lovely EI transformers to try instead of toroids. Can't wait to see what effect these will have on SQ.

A year or two ago i used very small (5VA) pcb mount EI transformers for dac and clock supplies in my Naim CD player. Whoops should not own up to having a Naim on this forum. Anyway, with the DAC i swapped the 5VA EI for a much larger toroid but much preferred the EI.

Anyone else like EI over toroids ?

So Doc, what makes you like toroids more than EI ?

Lower hum field ? Lower winding resistance ?

Toroids have long been regarded as superior.

Naim used them, so it's the best, my brainwashed days.

Naim's transformers may have been 'better,' but they were so loosely wound/not impregnated that most of them sounded off like buzz-saws with anything other than perfect mains. Maybe it was better to have them like this, but that was the least of their amp's problems ;)

The only real issue with toroidal transformers comes when the case shorts on the central mounting bolt! Acrylic cases obviously prevent any such problems.
