Goodmans Magnum K Refurb and Modification (part 2)
Goodmans Magnum K Refurb and Modification (part 2)
Ay up! Insert all northerner based jokes here.........
To keep this short and sweet here are the mod/refurb jobs completed since part 1 of this topic.
1, all internal wiring and caps have been replaced. The internal wiring wasn't something I'd considered necessary with me being a total novice but doc was kind enough to educate me on the matter of oxidation.
I have recycled where ever possible with this project and I was happy to make use of some speaker cable I had knocking about my house but was mainly shoved in a draw with a load of other shite.. in order to prevent confusion I used a different piece of cable for each driver with
thickest to thinest for bass mid and top. 2, I replaced the '2 pin din thing' with 4mm posts and purely for cosmetic purposes I used thin metal tile covers (recycled) to mount them giving them a more professional look. L-pad removal.
Admittedly this xover is not pretty but the mod has worked a treat.
For those that have the unfortunate task (Ronin) of trying to use this pic as reference for their own modification the wires from the drivers are as follows
1, Tweeter = White
2, Mid = Red/black
3, Bass = Bronze
Good luck.

Make sure that metal cover is not shorting the speaker connections or you will have a fried amplifier.

Luckily the 4mm posts have plastic washers/spacers so this isn't a problem...Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote:Make sure that metal cover is not shorting the speaker connections or you will have a fried amplifier.

I think it is, a stray strand of wire, an accidental touch of a plug to the plate. It is up to you but you will never see speaker terminal back plates in metal for this very reason.

If it were me , I would remove the 4mm posts , thread the speaker cable through the hole and hardwire them to the x-over . That way you get to keep the copper plate and improve sound quality ,imo .
You would however need to always makesure the integrity of the speaker dielectic is always kept in tact .

Re: Goodmans Magnum K Refurb and Modification (part 2)
I appreciate your thoughts on this and I mean in no way to discredit them but I do feel the xover would be vulnerable to damage if the cables were pulled and how much difference would hardwiring them actually make? And forgive my ignorance but do you mean "dielectrics" and by this are you referring to cable insulation?Daniel wrote:If it were me , I would remove the 4mm posts , thread the speaker cable through the hole and hardwire them to the x-over . That be my spelling that be sorry.
In my opioion the differevnce will be immediate and palpable.
But imho you should throw the xover the bin.
Recently thanks to paternity leave abd pursuant if the riducule i receiled on pfm for the xover mods i putvback the original xovers i have now concluded that everyone except the doc and zebbo is deaf
