To the box swappers out there - So many analogue recordings were digitised using the Sony 1630 system, is it not possible to get hold of one of these (sodding great box) units and configure and wire it for domestic matching? This would give a true nenchmark as to exactly how good domestic digital should be, so audiophile boxes that alter what's there could be heard for what they are?

'Scuse the clumsy wording above. I once heard the earlier 1610 wired A-D-A and inserted in a tapeloop and heard absolutely no difference at all when it was switched in or out (I was later told the real digital damage was in the editor stations used back then). the 1630 was reportedly better than this and I believe a few can now be got hold of at not outrageous prices? Might make a kind of benchmark for modern much simpler dac systems?

One of the problems with that as a test is that the two conversions are using the same clock domain, so jitter and clock recovery is never a issue.

A - D - Storage

Storage - D -A

is a better test if you don't want to "prove" its transparent.

Unfortunately the next meeting will have to be re-scheduled as we have issues in the listening room.

Apologies to all concerned, new meeting will be announced early November.

To confirm...

Have you just noticed that someone has left a bloody massive pair of Chinese wardrobes in there?

The cellar at chez MCRU is actually a Tardis-like time travelling machine. From the outside it's the size of a toilet. On the inside it's the size of a Kingdom Hall. At the next meeting we will be able to listen to some hi-fi from the future, where we will see and hear the expected amount of progress from 90 years of R&D (maybe a bit of progress, maybe it will have gone backwards). :ugeek:
