Now Blind Chile had this medieval/mystic/ecstatic/uplifting religious soundtrack by group Popol Vul since the seventies, but Blind Chile never seen the film.

Finally it turns up in the public library!



What is totally unique about this film is that Werner Herzog mainly used non-actors and filmed them all (with the exception of the glassblowers who were real glassblowers and it was too dangerous to film them at their craft under trance) under deep hypnosis, under real trance. Hertzog would teach them the dialogue in state of hypnosis. (If yew wans to beliefs that bull.)

He had sessions of, I beleive 25 people at a time, to determine which are the most susceptable to hypnosis.

A major fallacy about hypnosis is that you can control the person. You can only suggest.

(Also, it is a fallacy that the hypnotized HAVE to tell the truth - they lie.)

Most was shot in one or two takes since its a bad idea to keep them in trance too long.

He had to speak in two differented voices - one for the filming crew and one for the trances "actors".

In Hertzog's own words "the story has to do with a collective trance...like sleepwalkers."



Herzog grew up in a remote village on the border of Austria in Bavaria. He didnt know tv/films/phone till he was 11. No matrass, no running water, inventing one's own toys. He still prefers to walk instead of using a machine because his childhood was like that.

The film is, in part, about a Bavarian Nostradamus. A pre-Industrial Bavarian peasant village relies completely on its glassworks. The man who holds the secret to the making of ruby glass dies without telling anyone the fomula. In desperation to learn the secret formula ,the village reverts to collective madness,superstition & murder.

The film is very dreamlike. Hertzog trying to awaken the audience to images, attempting even to trance the audience.

Some shots required great discipline. For instance to get this remarkable one minute shot of a river of mist coming down on a Bavarian forest , it took 11 days of filming stills at 11 second intervals ,adjusting the light appropriately.

According to Herzog Scandinavians love this film but Americans cannot watch it because of their short attention span, they are too much accustomed to fast, fast story-telling etc. - its a slow moving, visionary, delicate movie.

Herzog is perverse when it comes to difficulty - he is notorious filming in very difficult locations (like in the Sahara or amongst real rival jungle tribes for his film Fitzcaraldo (or was it Aguirre Wrath of God - I forget). Here he specifically uses the Bavarian dialect which is difficult for most Germans speaking the usual High German.

Another Popol Vuh soundtrack for a Herzog film is "Nosferatu" featuring a (crazed face) actor Herzog uses a lot -Klaus Kinski.

Heart of Glass is a film very personal to Herzog , a nod to the Bavaria of his impoverished youth.

Aye, that is correct.
But it is a single louse, (like in Blake's piccy "Ghost of a Flea".)

Since you rarely encounter a single one, its more likely you use the word "voshi" (pronounced voh-shee)

6-part HBO scifi/doctor drama (trial Goy) series has Jeeves (of Jeeves & Wooster fame) cast as Hawkeye Louse, the extremely irritating , every-feckin'-sentence-a-wise-crack, head doctor at a Gormenghastian methadone clinic which is the size of a city and which,at its labyrinthian heart, has a football-field-sized chamber housing Maxine a gigantic queen bee wot squirts pure methadone out her pisser.

Nearly every episode has the addicted Louse sending his medical student underlings to the "homes" of junkies currently in the clinic for treatment, to ostensiblly check for hallucinogen-causing rising damp-emitting spores. These unfortunate students, so manipulated by Louse, realize that their 6 years of training would be for naught if caught, but they are being forced by the nefarious Louse to scavenge for drugs, money - anything left behind by the clinic "clients". The underlings do this for fear of the big man sitting on their chests and collapsing their rib cages.
