3D

Does anyone have any opinions on 3D films? We recently watched our first 3D Blu-ray via the new telly (it was the latest incarnation of the Star Trek franchise) and I was quietly impressed, and more importantly, so was the missus. To be honest I was half expecting it to be a total gimmick for 90% of the film and only come into it's own during some set-pieces. Surprisingly, to me at least, the 3D added to my enjoyment rather than being something obviously "tacked on" to add a couple of quid to the price of the disk. I know one film isn't really enough for me to form a solid opinion, but so far, so good. We've got Life of Pi next (the wife's choice this time) and hopefully it'll be as successful. I didn't choose the telly because it was 3D enabled, but I'm quite glad it is. I certainly won't be buying the 3D version of every film where it's available, just like I won't be buying disks simply because they are in 3D, but the option is there and I'm glad of it. I think Gravity may be on the shopping list shortly, possibly followed by Pacific Rim.

So, any opinions out there?

Gravity is probably quite good on 3D given the effects. However, I'd turn down the sound as there is no story as such. Just a sequence of narrow squeaks as Sandra reaches the next space station....

Well 3D is a bit of fun isn't it ? You lose quality but you get something whacky and different. I think the mistake ( or was it ) used to be that you had to buy a separate copy to get it, but I find increasingly that you can buy a pack with both for a good vfm price. I think this is the way to go. You can have the normal view, at highest quality and without the potential eye headache, or you can watch it in the fun, silly mode for extra fun and of course that works well with various non serious action flicks which are typically the sort of titles that come with 3D anyway.

In short, its optional and if they package it along with the standard version, it can be worth getting for all the little extra or none involved.

Always thought it was a gimmick until I saw Peter Gabrial in concert on a 3D tv and then saw the latest Jurassic Park movie at the cinema. Both were extremely enjoyable and beyond my expectations.

No good for me. Reduced vision in one eye means that 3D just gives me a headache.
