Re: Using Power Amps without a Pre Amp

Not really imo paul, because its dependent on what the output voltage of their source is and the efficiency of their speakers is Yes the power amp is going to do the same in each system, but the ancillary components are not, your cubes, magnums and the heresys are a case in point, im sure that the ...

Re: Using Power Amps without a Pre Amp

The a20 is difficult to get to work well with my speakers because they are 101db efficient, so its high gain input stage needs very little input voltage to get them to go very loud indeed. Most pots/attenuators are not very fine adjustable at the bottom of their travel, so using the a20, one minute...

True, but it's a basic frame of reference for those with NVA systems...

Re: Using Power Amps without a Pre Amp

My P90sa is almost always set to around 11 o' clock (the volume that I usually listen at with vinyl sources), then with digital I use the fine adjustment (and remote control) of the RME DAC. I don't detect any change in sound quality when reducing the volume using the RME compared to setting the RME...

Re: Using Power Amps without a Pre Amp

Just remember that NVA power amps don't need an active pre amp because they have an extra gain stage to work with passive pre amps. Using an active pre amp with most "other" power amps can give one better drive, but it's not 100% guaranteed. ;) One for Thomasz or savvypaul: is that true t...

Re: Using Power Amps without a Pre Amp

It will be safe unless there is a fatal failure of the RME's volume control - e.g. a short that causes the DAC to output excessive voltage - very, very unlikely. We like our passive pre-amps for sound quality and additional protection but we know of at least a couple of NVA users who are using a hig...

Re: Subversive

I’ve have mostly used used Rel subs with Quad 57’s, and older Tannoy Dual Concentrics (little gold monitors, Monitor Red etc) from the early 90’s onwards, but have always used the internal crossover that the sub offered, this helps relieve the speakers from the bass frequencies that they struggle w...
