Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
Theory says that low frequencies don't contribute to imaging so you could just have a woofer out of sight and keep the mid and tweeter in their own spheres without any need to sit on a, square, bass bin. Of course Geoff. But I am Like the Doc when I think all drivers should be as close to each othe...

Re: Phono 1 MC
The two wires which are joined together and soldered to 0V form a centre tap which is exactly half way between the two ends. Split rail psu's like this produce a positive and negative voltage relative to the centre which is 0V. The two secondary windings are simply wired in series with the point tha...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
Are you going to build first to check they work, or paint and then assemble? Seriously loving your "outside the box" thinking. Build to check it all works first then finish. I am testing the finishing process on a ball which I won't be using as I cut holes big enough for the face plate. T...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
I have now babbled on for 150 pages of waffle.
Painting plastic - as well as plasti dip primer and top coat I am going to try etch primer or pva before priming. The advantage of using acrylic would have been no finishing required but hey you can't have it all ways.

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
What I have read about hdpe isn't very encouraging as regards speaker building. It's OK for the tweeter pod as it's not pressurised by the mid bass. Using it for the mid bass enclosure is a bit of a gamble. The only saving grace is the sphere being the strongest shape. I wouldn't have considered thi...

Re: Simple Gadgets you can build DIY only
Very kind of you Colin :guiness; How about a twist on the data sheet LM317 pre tracking reg like this with a gyrator / capacitance multiplier tacked on the front (not shown) using BC547 with 10K ohm resistor and 3.3uf film cap ? Oh and the option to set output voltage to 5V with two plain green LED...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
HDPE is hard to paint apparently. Plasti dip might be the only option which is fine with me. I tried some plasti dip primer on an old one today after roughing it up with some sandpaper. We will see how this goes.

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
Stu, being clever you will have realised that the orientation of the finished assembly can have the tweeter pod behind, in front or anywhere in between simply by rotating the base so that the column is appropriately located. Try it and see which is best. Hi Geoff. I had thought about it but to be h...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
Bought a couple of these today  30cm diameter toy balls for pigs    Yes, I shit you not. They are made of high density polyethylene and must be bloody strong if you can put them in a pen with pigs and they last more than 10 minutes. The destructive power of pigs is extremely fo...
