Re: Speakers

Hi Fi World started a DIY trend many years ago, and published a DIY supplement which came free every now and then with the magazine. They did everything that you could ask for. DIY kits for amplifiers and well written articles on loudspeaker design and build. I still have most DIY supplements on pap...

Re: Speakers

The thing is, we all have different views on what a speaker should sound like. We all have different room sizes with different acoustic properties. Most of us use different amplification and replay equipment. So, even if you could test every speaker in the world the results would only be applicable ...

Re: Speakers

I've seen speakers constructed by inexperienced DIYers and some are horrendous. I started building speakers in the mid 90s, and found its easy to build speakers that do some things well, or even do some thing's exceptionally well, but building a speaker that does most things very well in every depa...

Re: Listed on behalf of nadia dunn

Sad to say, but if the "new" cubes that Savvy has prototyped are as good as he says won't that devalue what "old" cubes are worth ?

Re: Speakers

The SB Acoustics drivers in a pair of Gato FM30's will cost around about £500. A pair of Fane 12 250TC's costs £150. Stick the Fanes in braced sealed 80 litre boxes and you have a good sounding pair of speakers. You don't even need to be an experienced DIY'er. Nor even a DIY'er at all. All you need...

Re: 4 way Frankenstein high efficiency speakers

I do not intend using MDF nor chipboard on my speakers. So, does that mean you are likely to be using BBP ? (Baltic birch ply) Regardless of the material, have you a plan as to how the different parts of each module (the cabinet that is) will be joined together? Are you skilled in use of a router ?...

Re: 4 way Frankenstein high efficiency speakers

Time will tell how my Frankensteins turn out. I have some good classic Yank speakers to compare them against. So I'll know quickly and easily if and where any major sonic faults are with my DIY efforts. I'm not exactly re-inventing the wheel here. From 600 hz upwards I'm basically copying my EV spe...

Re: 4 way Frankenstein high efficiency speakers

Hi Lindsay, it was good to chat with you at Owston on Saturday. :) Just try to bear in mind that very few DIY ers crack the ultimate speaker on their first attempt. Even Colin Topps often uses MDF or chipboard on prototypes to make sure the concept is sound ('scuse the pun) before buying something l...

Re: HS2 opinions

Mothballing of lines would not have served Beeching's purpose which was to shift traffic to roads to benefit road haulage. A common misapprehension. Beeching just did what he was asked to do by Ernest Marples, who was minister of transport at the time. His (Marples) business was Marples Ridgeway, a...

Re: HS2 opinions

Upgrading the Chiltern Line would be less expensive and of greater utility than HS2 but less exciting. I believe the Chiltern line was upgraded not that many years ago, and that some people prefer that route to Birmingham. Having seen a cab ride video of the line after upgrading, and also videos of...
