Re: New Open Baffle Project

Enjoying your thread Simon. MiniDSP is something i have never played with. My purist beliefs probably wouldn't let me  Silly isn't it. I won't even allow myself a smartphone. Yes, I don't have a smartphone either - hateful things! A month ago I would have agree with you re. the miniDSP. Howev...

Re: DAC to the Future

The Khadas Tone Board has arrived and is now installed. First impressions are very positive. Despite only having a few hours on the clock, it's pretty obvious to me that it's outperforming the AQ Dragonfly Red. In particular, orchestral instruments are more textured and with better defined leading e...

Re: New Open Baffle Project

One thing that has become very obvious with the miniDSP is how very EQ small changes of as little as 0.5db can have quite significant changes on the voicing of the speakers. For example, I've applied a mild 'S curve' to the response zeroed at around 1khz with about 1.5db of lift towards 100hz, and 1...

Re: DAC to the Future

Sounds good Fretless! I've gone for the Khadas Tone Board from Amazon. It also does DSD, and on all the comparative reviews I've seen, it performs well above its price point. It's a bare board, but I can either install it in a DIY cigar box, or buy one in from a supplier in France. On the S/PDIF cab...

Re: DAC to the Future

Hi Fretless. Much good information, thanks. DSD is not something I'm familiar with, but it looks well worth investigating - claims of it being more analogue like are intriguing. More Topping D30 digging round needed I think. Thanks again.

Re: Your last listen

Anton Bruckner, Symphony No 8; VPO / Karajan (1989). My first time listening to this. The work has appeared in a critics poll of the top 20 symphonies of all time, a well deserved accolade even after just one listening. 19th C Romantic era music isn't always my cup of tea, but towards the end of the...

Re: DAC to the Future

Thanks chaps. This is pretty much my thinking. The Hifiberry has the benefit of 2 separate oscillators for 44.1 and 48kHz which overcomes one of the main Raspi weaknesses over USB. £35.99 delivered from the Pi Hut. I'm veering towards the Khadas Tone Board over the D30. I've read some reports that t...

Re: DAC to the Future

This is timely as I'm pondering whether to change the Dragonfly Red. My perception of the Red is that it lacks a bit of meat in the upper bass / lower mids. I believe the Topping D30 is better in this area. There's also another contender out there: the Khadas Tone Board at about the same price point...
