Re: British amps
The 70's Jap Rotels were full of crossover distortion I gather and that's one distortion that can be audible from experience. As the 80's went on, I believe Stan (the man) Curtis did freelance design and consultancy work as regards the BX models (Stan was one of a few engineers back then, either ele...

Re: British amps
No Quad either (up to the early 909 it was British), or Croft. Radford has been available on and off for decades now and what about Meridian? Even MF made some serious big power amps over the years to cachet-compete with the US muscle amps. I remember the FMJ amp as being mostly an Alpha 10 integrat...

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
Intact original Lenco's have an idler bracket and linkage that helps retract the idler assembly away and down from the motor and platter when the deck is switched off (better to look at than to describe it). If the idler arm isn't sitting properly in this, you may get strange stuff happening. The sl...

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
The platter is fitted to a TAPERED main spindle. A sharp pull upwards may be all you need, otherwise a third hand with a gentle tap with a mallet will do it ;) The motor (for those that don't know) is sprung and on most lenco's, there's two red headed screws which are 'unscrewed' fully anti-clockwis...

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
So what cartridge would you suggest DQ? I'm still employed from time to time locally as a turntable professional and am paid accordingly (and by RD too when he was alive), and I do know this particular deck quite well now, having had it here at home twice for weeks at a time and I do know the arm, h...

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
I'm trying to be careful with the suggestions, knowing the arm and the entire deck 'sound' as well as I do.

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
See above - 1042 has too much HF! Ok, if you really don't like high frequencies, go for a Grado Gold 1 instead. Warm, gentle highs and as far away from neutral 'digital' as I think you can get these days. The Sumiko Pearl is a current version of the old Rega R100 and related A&R E77 which had a ...

Re: Cartridge for Doc's G99/Neat
You lot don't like your high frequencies do you? :D I'd sooner look to Hana or AT MC's myself as the Neat arm has no bias correction amongst other things. An AT-F7 should be ample for this particular deck and tonearm, which I got to know quite well after the initial build and I tried several differe...

Re: Cubbets and sub
As I understand it, you shouldn't connect any sub to NVA power amps, but since most subs are active with their own amps, it may be possible to connect to a spare set of preamp outputs as discussed before if you have a P50 or P90. My own take on subs used to be that many rolled out up-top too gently,...

Re: Bi-wire options
Three things about bi-wiring - a, The dealer sells you two sets of cable instead of one - and cables are often very high profit to a dealer b, The amp sees a different load, maybe slightly different in some cases c, The amp may react to this load and what you hear may be this reaction rather than a ...
