A mixture of mdf and ply is my preference after messing about for years with different combinations. I have also used a mix of bbp and acrylic which works well. That was a plinth for an lp12. Get some bitumen damping pads, the kind used inside car doors.
Take the top off, stick them inside the top cover.
That will shut it up

The only time I have replaced caps in anything is if they have failed, and there is a fault that can be traced to them.
