Re: An Exercise in Daftness.

Damn shame that Fane don't make 15 ohm versions of that full range driver.

Re: Yorkshire HIFI club Phono Stage write up / results

I was there, and I'm guessing it was just down to low levels from the cartridge to be honest, but tech investigation will confirm. For me, it came as a bit of a relief to have the NVA stage playing a bit less ear-bleedingly loud lol. I could still hear perfectly well what it was doing musically and ...

Re: What do we think about record clamps?

It is to do with potential power in the fusing / explosion. Internal fuses are on low(ish) DC rails or on signal paths / speaker outputs. The potential is relatively low compared with mains potential, just a little pop when they blow. They have been known to break the glass on fusing, but it is rar...

Re: What do we think about record clamps?

You can still take the bloody stoopid thing out. They say that is dangerous, not at all, nothing will explode, the worse that can happen is your CU trips. Where as these illegal SR fuses used in UK 13 amp plugs WILL EXPLODE IF THEY FUSE as they contain no damper as in sand or quartz crystal. That e...

What do we think about record clamps?

Anyone use them? Or not? Up until recently I was using a Herbies "Record Stabilizer" - basically a lightish weight hockey puck with the centre drilled out and some sorbothane-like material on the bottom edge. The idea being that it would have the same effect as a high mass clamp (neutralis...

Re: What turntabe do you use and why ?

I have the first 'solid chassis' Garrard 301 made by Ray Clark of Classic Turntable Company, I think I got it in 2010. In 2012 it was upgraded with the solid brass platter and new grease bearing, and set into an SMD Reference plinth developed by Shaun Daniels of Peak HiFi. It's powered by a Loricraf...

Re: Lancs collection.

Hey that's our GL72 in the 2nd and 3rd pics! We got it for Meredith's 78's. Really nice sounding deck, and I can easily pick it up and move it about unlike the 301 which weighs more than the moon. The Type 2 GL75 conversions always put me in mind of the (very expensive) Teres turntable range.

Re: Computer audio and my closed mind

The Google Chromecast Audio might be worth trying, it'll support FLAC up to 24/96kHz. I use mine with a secondhand DacMagic and the resulting sound is considerably better than any CD player I've had in my system. The Chromecast's own analogue output is no slouch either - and it's only £30, so a chea...

Re: Stepped attenuators

This is probably academic and a bit overkill for what you're after, but just for interest, when I was planning my recent linestage build, I decided I wanted stepped attenuation AND full remote control, which somewhat narrowed my options! In the end I built a linestage around this Arduino-based proc...
