Re: The size of instruments

Should a grand piano and drum kit sound bigger than everything else? If Baldrick played his triangle how big should that be?

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

I think those stainless steel balls are too thin walled (1mm) to be any good unfortunately. :(

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

Found some 38cm (15") stainless steel balls on Amazon. Slightly too big but wow. They do smaller ones too. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71Tlhx0QU%2BL._AC_SL1001_.jpg Stainless is hard to work and don't know it's acoustic properties. The listing doesn't give a wall thickness....

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

Making a thinner faceplate. Sheet copper, brass or aluminum can be had in thicknesses of 0.4mm and 0.5mm. That should be strong enough for my needs. I have some 0.7mm copper sheet. Will the extra 0.3mm thickness matter in the grand scheme of things ? Copper isn't the easiest metal to work with but c...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

Gone off that idea as it is bound to affect the dispersion and act as a sort of waveguide. Probably ok if you were making a point and squirt controlled directivity speaker. That's not what I am doing here :naughty: I am trying to do it in a way that means I can do away with the face plate altogether...

Very odd, I could see it in chrome but not bing. It was a copy image address from diyaudio. Imgur would not upload it for a while but I have managed to upload it there now and replace the address. You should be able to see it in my last post now.

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

Smooth from dome to edge of faceplate and nicely rounded over. This sort of thing could be done and blend in with the curve of the spherical enclosure. Like a donut cut in half. https://i.imgur.com/f6Mk4Gm.jpg Just don't know what will happen unless I tried it. How would dispersion be affected ?? I ...

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7

One more thing I have noticed after removing the faceplates and improving diffraction is that sibilants are less pronounced. Not that they were a problem before but they sound more natural now. Some Stevie Wonder recordings emphasise sibilants and they are more rounded now.

The size of instruments

Over the 15 years I have been reading audio forums, articles etc on the internet I have often come across comments like "I didn't like speaker x because the trumpet image was 6ft tall or wide" I have never listened for such things in a recording. I have been listening for it recently thoug...
