Re: The BMU Bandits

I don't have the parts here, but Tom currently has access to them when he's here and I believe in the last year he probably made them all to order, as they were too expensive to stockpile, unlike the preamps and A20's for example. If you're serious about buying one, why not PM him and see if he can ...

Re: NVA E-Bay Shop

This stuff should do and looks basically similar to the LS2, which I understand came from different suppliers over the years (mine's Ebion Kablo) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-CORE-ELECTRICAL-CABLE-SINGLE-WIRE-LENGTH-6491X-1-5-2-5-4-6-10mm2-230V/272529265054?hash=item3f7402919e:m:mlBoiMdjWEeBo5L-cg5O...

Re: P50 Stepped attenuators

I'd recommend leaving well alone just for now. The 70 and probably the 80 have large finned plate heat-sinks inside taking up some height and it would be a royal pain to try to un-stick them and move them back, assuming there'd be any space. The stock cheap pot isn't as bad sonically as it looks vis...

Re: P50 Stepped attenuators

Thing is, look what's in the gear upstream and downstream of this sodding attenuator! Also the distortion the source and amp puts in, let alone the speakers and whatever they're doing. A couple of sodding resistors ain't going to transform or ruin anything I'm sure - and if metal films took fillings...

Re: P50 Stepped attenuators

I always thought carbons were 'noisier' and also inclined to drift. Metal films are usually much closer tolerance these days (1% or less) and that's what NVA amp boards are made using. Still, it's fun to try different things.

Re: P50 Stepped attenuators

Later preamps use 10k log film pots, so I assume the stepped attenuators were similar. HiFi Collective may be able to advise further.

Re: DAC to the Future

 It's not about performance for outlay, it's about cachet, being at the top of Naim's 'tree' and being able to afford it without blinking. The 'rest of us' will have to make do with similarly performing Toppings and so on and for a bit of luxury on the way up, maybe Chord's little sweet boxes :D

Re: mass loading speakers

Depends on the floor standers and if they're properly spiked or not - there were genuine repeatable reasons why we recommended floor spikes back then for most domestic speakers you know.. ;) Some speakers it makes no difference with, but not getting the boxes to freely wobble must make some sort of ...
